๐งช Minecraft Potion Brewing Guide
Complete brewing guide โ from awkward potion base to every effect. Learn all recipes, modifiers, splash and lingering variants for Minecraft 1.21.
Brewing Basics
To brew potions, you need a Brewing Stand (crafted from 1 blaze rod + 3 cobblestone). Blaze powder is used as fuel โ 1 blaze powder = 20 brews. Water bottles are the base ingredient for all potions.
The brewing process follows a consistent pattern: start with water bottles, brew a base ingredient to create an awkward potion (or mundane/mundane thick potion), then add the effect ingredient to create the desired potion. Finally, add modifiers for duration, potency or area of effect.
Key materials: Blaze rods (from Nether fortresses), nether wart (from Nether fortresses), glowstone (from Nether), redstone (from mining), gunpowder (from creepers), dragon's breath (from Ender Dragon).

Potion Modifiers
Modifiers change a potion's duration, potency or form. Add them after brewing the base effect potion:
| Modifier | Effect | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Redstone Dust | Extends duration (1.7-2.6x) | Add after the effect. Cannot combine with glowstone. |
| Glowstone Dust | Increases potency (II level) | Reduces duration. Cannot combine with redstone. |
| Gunpowder | Creates Splash Potion | Throwable AOE effect. Potency slightly reduced. |
| Dragon's Breath | Creates Lingering Potion | Area effect cloud lingers for 15 seconds. Use with splash pots. |
| Fermented Spider Eye | Inverts effect | Speed โ Slowness, Night Vision โ Invisibility, Healing โ Harming, Poison โ Harming. |
Splash & Lingering Potions
Splash Potions are created by adding gunpowder to any potion. They are thrown like a projectile and affect all entities within a 4-block radius. Splash potions of Healing and Harming are the most useful for combat โ instant AOE health/damage. Splash weakness potions are essential for curing zombie villagers.
Lingering Potions are created by adding Dragon's Breath to a splash potion. They leave a cloud that lasts 15 seconds. Lingering potions of Healing and harming are niche. Lingering water bottles can be used to create infinite water sources in the Nether. Lingering potions are also used to craft tipped arrows (8 arrows + lingering potion = 8 tipped arrows).
Brewing Tips
- Gather blaze rods first: A Nether fortress is your first Nether priority. Blaze rods are used for both brewing stands and blaze powder (fuel).
- Build a brewing room: Set up multiple brewing stands with chests of water bottles, nether wart and blaze powder. Brew in bulk โ 3 water bottles per brewing stand run.
- Brew extended fire resistance first: Redstone + Fire Resistance = 8 minutes of fire immunity. Essential for Nether exploration and ancient debris mining.
- Invisibility + Speed: A speed potion and invisibility potion together let you explore the Nether safely โ mobs cannot see you unless you bump into them.
- Slow Falling for the Dragon fight: Slow Falling potions prevent fall damage entirely โ extremely useful for the Ender Dragon fight when the dragon knocks you off the island.
- Water Breathing for ocean monuments: Extended water breathing potions (8 minutes) let you explore ocean monuments and underwater ruins freely.
- Tip arrows for PvP: Lingering potions + arrows = tipped arrows. Slowness and Poison arrows are effective in multiplayer combat.
