Every essential crafting recipe in Minecraft 1.21. From basic tools to advanced redstone components, this guide covers it all. Crafting is the core mechanic of Minecraft — without it, you cannot survive, build or progress.

In Minecraft, crafting is done through the crafting table (3x3 grid) or the player inventory crafting grid (2x2). To craft an item, you arrange materials in a specific pattern. Some recipes are "shapeless" — the materials can be placed anywhere — while others require a precise pattern. Below we cover all the essential recipes organized by category.

Tools & Weapons

Tools and weapons are the first things you will craft in any survival world. The table below compares all six tool materials so you can choose the best option for your stage of the game.

Essential Tools

Every tool in Minecraft serves a specific purpose. The pickaxe is for mining stone and ores. The axe chops wood faster. The shovel digs dirt, sand and gravel. The hoe tills soil for farming. The sword is your primary melee weapon. Below are the key recipes:

• Pickaxe — 3 material units on top row + 2 sticks in middle column. Used to mine stone, ores and any block that requires a pickaxe.
• Axe — 3 material units on top and middle left + 2 sticks. Best for chopping wood quickly. Also functions as a weapon dealing high damage.
• Sword — 2 material units in a column + 1 stick below. Your primary melee weapon. Diamond/netherite swords deal 7-8 damage.
• Shovel — 1 material unit on top + 2 sticks below. Digs dirt, sand, gravel and snow.
• Hoe — 2 material units on top left/middle + 2 sticks. Tills dirt for farming.
• Fishing Rod — 3 sticks diagonally + 2 string. Used for fishing. Can also hook mobs.

Weapons

• Bow — 3 string in a column + 3 sticks in a triangle pattern. Ranged weapon. Best enchanted with Power V and Flame.
• Crossbow — 3 string + 2 sticks + 1 iron ingot. Slower than bow but fires rockets and piercing arrows. Can be loaded with fireworks.
• Shield — 6 planks in a Y pattern + 1 iron ingot on top. Blocks all melee damage and 1/3 of arrow damage. Essential for hard mode.
• Mace — New in 1.21. Crafted from breeze rods and a heavy core. Smash attack deals bonus damage based on fall distance.

Armor

Armor reduces incoming damage. Each piece provides different protection values. Full diamond armor reduces damage by 80%. Netherite armor is tougher and provides knockback resistance.

• Helmet — 5 material units in a U shape. Protects head. Can be enchanted with Aqua Affinity and Respiration.
• Chestplate — 8 material units (all except top center). Highest protection piece. Best for Thorns enchantment.
• Leggings — 7 material units (both legs pattern). Second highest protection.
• Boots — 4 material units in left/right columns. Best for Feather Falling and Depth Strider.

Material Comparison: Which Tool Material Is Best?

Choosing the right tool material depends on your stage of the game and what you are mining:

Early game (first 30 minutes): Wooden tools are quick to make but break easily. Mine 3 stone immediately and upgrade to stone tools — they last twice as long and mine faster.

Mid game (after finding iron): Iron tools are the workhorse of any survival world. They have 250 durability and mine at speed 6. Upgrade your pickaxe, sword and shield to iron as soon as you smelt enough ingots.

Diamond: Once you find diamonds (typically at Y-level -58), craft a diamond pickaxe first. Diamond tools have 1561 durability and mining speed 8. Enchant them with Efficiency V for the best experience.

Netherite: The ultimate upgrade. Find ancient debris in the Nether (best at Y 15), smelt into netherite scraps, craft with gold into netherite ingots. Combine with diamond gear at an anvil for knockback resistance and the highest durability (2031).

Gold: Gold tools are surprisingly fast (speed 12) but very fragile (32 durability). Gold pickaxes can enchant well (enchantability 22) but break in seconds. Use gold only for fast mining when you have plenty of resources.
