Overworld Biomes

The Overworld has dozens of biomes, each with unique terrain, mobs, vegetation and resources. Below we cover the most important ones.

๐ŸŒฒ Forest

Forests are excellent starter biomes. They feature oak and birch trees, flowers, passive mobs (sheep, pigs, chickens, cows) and wolves. Bee nests generate on oak and birch trees. Forests have plenty of wood and food, making them ideal for new players. Taiga and Dark Forest variants exist โ€” dark forests have roofed trees and woodland mansions.

โ›ฐ๏ธ Plains

Flat, open terrain perfect for building. Plains have horses, donkeys, villages and the most passive mobs of any biome. Villages are common, providing beds, food, tools and trading. Easy to navigate and build in โ€” ideal for first bases.

๐Ÿœ๏ธ Desert

Deserts have sand, sandstone, cacti and dead bushes. Desert temples contain valuable loot (diamonds, emeralds, iron). Husks spawn instead of zombies (they inflict hunger). Villages in deserts are made of sandstone. Water is scarce โ€” carry a water bucket.

โ›ฐ๏ธ Mountains (Stony Peaks / Jagged Peaks)

High-altitude biomes with emerald ore (the only place to find it), exposed caves and goats. Great for mining โ€” surface-level caves reveal coal, iron and deepslate ores. Build a base in the mountains for panoramic views and easy access to deep caves.

๐ŸŒŠ Ocean Biomes

Oceans have warm, lukewarm, cold and frozen variants. Warm oceans have coral reefs, tropical fish and sea pickles. Lukewarm oceans have kelp and cod. All oceans have shipwrecks and underwater ruins with valuable loot. Ocean monuments (guardians, elder guardians) are found in deep ocean variants. Conduits (crafted from nautilus shells and heart of the sea) give underwater breathing and mining speed.

๐Ÿœ๏ธ Badlands

Badlands (formerly Mesa) feature terracotta layers (red, orange, yellow, white, brown, gray) and red sand. Gold ore generates above Y 32 โ€” surface gold veins are common. No passive mobs spawn here except rabbits. Mineshafts generate on the surface. Excellent for building with terracotta blocks.

๐ŸŒณ Taiga

Taigas have spruce trees, wolves, foxes, sweet berry bushes and taiga villages. Foxes follow sweet berries. Wolves are common. Taigas are cold biomes โ€” water freezes into ice in winter. Good for early-game resources.

๐ŸŒธ Cherry Grove

Cherry groves are rare biomes with pink cherry trees and pink petals. Beautiful building material โ€” cherry planks have a warm pink tone. Perfect for aesthetic builds. Bees and sheep spawn here.

โ˜• Swamp

Swamps have shallow water, oak trees with vines, clay patches and blue orchids. Slimes spawn at night. Witch huts generate with a witch inside (and a black cat). Swamp villages are on stilts. Good for clay (bricks) and slimeballs.

๐Ÿ„ Mushroom Fields

The rarest Overworld biome. Mushroom fields have mycelium ground, huge mushrooms and mooshroom cows (red and brown variants). No hostile mobs spawn here โ€” ever. Safe haven for building. Mooshrooms can be milked for mushroom stew (red) or suspicious stew (brown with flowers).

Nether Biomes

The Nether has five biomes, each with distinct terrain and mobs. All Nether biomes have a ceiling at Y 128.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Nether Wastes

The classic Nether biome. Netherrack, gravel, glowstone clusters, magma cubes, ghasts, piglins and endermen. It is the most open Nether biome โ€” ghasts are the biggest threat. Piglins will trade with gold ingots.

๐ŸŒ‹ Crimson Forest

Crimson forests have crimson nylium, crimson stems (wood), warped/crimson fungi, nether sprouts and weeping vines. Hoglins and piglins spawn here. Hoglins drop porkchops (best food source in the Nether). Crimson wood is useful for building and crafting.

๐ŸŒŠ Warped Forest

The safest Nether biome โ€” only endermen spawn here, and they are neutral unless looked at. Warped nylium, warped stems and warped fungi. Warped wood is visually stunning (blue-green). Perfect for building a Nether base or a safe travel hub.

๐Ÿชฆ Soul Sand Valley

A dangerous open biome with soul sand, soul soil and basalt columns. Skeletons and ghasts are common. Soul sand slows movement. The blue-gray aesthetic is popular for atmospheric builds. Lots of fossils.

๐ŸŒ‹ Basalt Deltas

Basalt and blackstone terrain. Magma cubes spawn in high numbers โ€” good for magma cream. Lava is everywhere. The gray/black color palette is striking. Hard to navigate due to uneven terrain.

End Biomes

๐Ÿ๏ธ Main End Island

Obsidian pillars (10 total), end crystals on top, the Ender Dragon flying overhead. After defeating the dragon, an exit portal appears and a gateway to the outer islands is created.

๐ŸŒŒ Outer Islands

Accessed through the end gateway (throw an ender pearl or build a bridge). Chorus plants (grow from chorus flowers, dropped from endermen), end cities and end ships. End ships contain elytra (wings). Shulkers hide in end cities โ€” they shoot levitating projectiles. Chorus fruit teleports the eater (useful for escaping danger).

Best Biomes for Building

For aesthetic builds, cherry groves and mushroom fields are popular. For practical bases, plains or desert biomes offer flat terrain. For immersive survival, build in a forest or mountain biome. Nether bases look stunning in warped forests or crimson forests. Underground bases work in any biome but are most efficient in mountains with exposed caves.
