Pro tip: Place 15 bookshelves one block away from the enchanting table (with a one-block gap) for level 30 enchants. Always use lapis lazuli in the second slot โ€” it is required.

Enchanting Table Setup

The enchanting table requires 4 obsidian, 2 diamonds and 1 book to craft. To reach the maximum enchanting level (30), you need 15 bookshelves placed in a specific pattern:

When you enchant at level 30, you get three options: the cheapest (2 lapis + levels 20-30), the middle (2 lapis + 27-30) and the most expensive (3 lapis + level 30). If you do not like the options, enchant a cheap book to reroll.

Best Enchantments by Item

๐Ÿ—ก๏ธ Sword

Sharpness V is the most important โ€” it adds 1.25 damage per level (6.25 total at V). Looting III increases mob drops by up to 3 extra per kill โ€” essential for wither skeleton skulls and ender pearls. Fire Aspect II sets mobs on fire. Sweeping Edge III increases sweep attack damage by 75%. Ideal sword: Sharpness V + Looting III + Fire Aspect II + Sweeping Edge III + Unbreaking III.

โ›๏ธ Pickaxe

Efficiency V increases mining speed by 25 per level โ€” instant stone mining. Fortune III multiplies ore drops by 2-4x (diamonds, coal, redstone, lapis). Silk Touch lets you mine blocks in their original form (glass, bookshelves, ores). Carry two pickaxes: one Silk Touch, one Fortune.

๐Ÿช– Helmet

Respiration III extends underwater breathing by 15 seconds per level (45 total). Aqua Affinity makes underwater mining operate at normal speed. Protection IV reduces all damage by 16% per level.

๐Ÿ‘• Chestplate

Protection IV is best overall. Thorns III has a 15% chance per level to deal 1-4 damage to attackers. Unbreaking III triples effective durability.

๐Ÿ‘Ÿ Boots

Feather Falling IV negates most fall damage (48% reduction at IV). Depth Strider III makes you swim at normal walking speed. Soul Speed III increases walking speed on soul sand/soil. Protection IV for general defense.

๐Ÿน Bow

Power V adds 50% damage per level (150% total). Flame sets arrows on fire (cooked meat, entity damage). Infinity is amazing for regular arrows but conflicts with Mending. Punch II adds knockback.

Anvil Mechanics

The anvil (3 iron blocks + 4 iron ingots) lets you combine enchanted items and books. Key rules:

Best practice: Combine books first (book + book in anvil) to create high-level books, then apply to the item in one operation. This reduces the prior work penalty significantly.

Mending Strategies

Mending repairs items with XP orbs. It is the most valuable enchantment in the game. Mending cannot be obtained from the enchanting table โ€” only from:

Once you have Mending on your gear, XP from mining, fighting and smelting automatically repairs items. Carry a held item (sword/tool) to prioritize its repair. Build an XP farm (see Farming & XP guide) for unlimited repairs.

Villager Book Trading

Librarian villagers are the best source of high-level enchanted books. Here is how to set up a librarian trading hall:

  1. Breed villagers or transport them to your base.
  2. Place a lectern โ€” the unemployed villager becomes a librarian.
  3. Check the first trade (enchanted book). If it is not Mending or the desired enchantment, break the lectern and replace it to reroll.
  4. Lock the trade by trading once (the profession sticks).
  5. Cure the zombie villager version for permanent discounts (1 emerald per book).
  6. Repeat with multiple librarians for all enchantments.
