Passive Mobs

Passive mobs never attack the player. They can be bred, tamed or farmed for resources. Most passive mobs spawn on grass blocks with light level 9 or higher.

๐Ÿ„ Cow

Cows spawn in grassy biomes with light level 9+. They drop leather (0-2) and raw beef (1-3) when killed. Using a bucket on a cow gives milk. Cows follow wheat and can be bred with it. They are one of the best food sources in the game โ€” cooked steak restores the most hunger of any food.

๐Ÿ‘ Sheep

Sheep spawn in most grassy biomes in small groups. They drop 1-3 mutton and 1 wool when killed. Using shears on a sheep yields 1-3 wool without killing it. Sheep come in 16 natural colors but can be dyed. They eat grass to regrow wool. Essential for beds.

๐Ÿท Pig

Pigs spawn in grassy biomes. They drop 1-3 raw porkchop. Pigs follow carrots. A saddle can be placed on a pig, and a carrot on a stick lets you ride it (slow but fun). Pigs are a reliable food source early game.

๐Ÿ” Chicken

Chickens spawn in grassy biomes. They drop 0-2 feathers, 1 raw chicken and 0-1 egg. Chickens follow seeds. Eggs can be thrown to spawn baby chickens (1/8 chance). Auto chicken farms are easy to build โ€” eggs + hopper + dispenser.

๐Ÿบ Wolf

Wolves spawn in forests and taigas. They can be tamed with bones (1-8 needed). Tamed wolves follow and protect you, attacking anything that hits you. Health: 20 (wild) / 40 (tamed). They sit when right-clicked.

๐Ÿฑ Cat

Cats spawn in villages (stray cats) and witch huts. Tamed with raw cod or salmon. Creepers avoid cats โ€” a tamed cat nearby prevents creeper explosions. Very useful for mining and building.

๐ŸŽ Horse / Donkey / Mule

Horses spawn in plains and savannas. Tamed by repeatedly mounting. Speed and jump height vary by individual (look for fast ones). Donkeys can carry a chest (15 slots). Mules are crossbred โ€” faster than donkeys with chest capacity. Saddles required to control.

Neutral Mobs

Neutral mobs are peaceful until provoked. Once attacked, they become hostile to the player who attacked them.

๐Ÿ Bee

Bees spawn near bee nests in flower forests, plains and sunflower plains. They fly to flowers to collect pollen. If you break a nest or harvest honey without a campfire underneath, all bees in the area become hostile and poison you. Use a campfire to calm bees. Honey bottles and honey blocks are useful.

๐Ÿš Dolphin

Dolphins spawn in all ocean biomes. They are friendly but will attack if you hit them. Feeding a dolphin raw cod makes it lead you to nearby underwater ruins or shipwrecks. Dolphin's Grace effect (swimming near dolphins) makes you swim faster.

๐Ÿ Llama

Llamas spawn in savannas and mountain biomes. They can be tamed by repeatedly mounting. Tamed llamas can carry up to 15 items (depends on strength stat). They spit at attacking mobs โ€” minor damage but funny.

๐Ÿ  Pufferfish

Found in warm oceans. Swells when approached, dealing poison damage to nearby players. Used for water breathing potions. Pufferfish are also defensive โ€” they puff up when any mob comes close.

๐Ÿ‘น Piglin

Piglins spawn in Nether wastes and crimson forests. They are neutral by default but become hostile if you mine gold blocks or open chests near them. Bartering: give a piglin a gold ingot and it throws back items (ender pearls, obsidian, fire resistance potions, etc.). Soul fire, soul torches and soul lanterns scare piglins. Piglins love gold armor โ€” wear at least one gold piece to stay safe in the Nether. Zombified piglins are neutral unless attacked.

๐ŸŸ Zombified Piglin

Spawns in the Nether. Neutral unless attacked (then all nearby zombified piglins become hostile). They do not drop XP orbs. Useful for gold farms.

Hostile Mobs

Hostile mobs attack the player on sight. Most spawn in darkness (light level 0) and burn in sunlight (except those with helmets).

๐ŸงŸ Zombie

Zombies spawn in darkness in the Overworld. They drop rotten flesh (0-2), rarely carrots, potatoes or iron ingots. 8% spawn with equipment. Burn in sunlight. Villagers become zombie villagers when killed by zombies โ€” can be cured with weakness potion + golden apple for trades discounts. Drowned zombies spawn in oceans.

๐Ÿ’€ Skeleton

Skeletons shoot arrows from range. They drop bones (0-2), arrows (0-2) and rarely bows or armor. Burn in sunlight unless wearing helmet. Skeleton horses spawn from "skeleton trap" during thunderstorms. Skeletons turn into strays in snowy biomes โ€” strays shoot slowness arrows.

๐Ÿ‘ป Creeper

Creepers silently approach players and explode after 1.5 seconds. They drop gunpowder (0-2). Charged creepers (struck by lightning) drop mob heads on kill. Creepers flee from cats and ocelots โ€” always keep a cat nearby. A charged creeper explosion is powerful enough to destroy obsidian.

๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ Spider

Spiders are neutral in light and hostile in darkness. They climb walls and leap at players. Drop string (0-2) and spider eyes. Cave spiders are smaller, poison-inflicting variants found in mineshafts โ€” very dangerous in tight spaces.

๐Ÿชฃ Enderman

Endermen spawn in the Overworld (darkness) and the End. They are neutral unless you look at them (direct eye contact). They teleport to avoid water and projectiles. Drops: 0-1 ender pearl. In the End, endermen are abundant. Enderman farms are the best XP source in the game โ€” build one on an end island.

๐Ÿ”ฅ Blaze

Blazes spawn in Nether fortresses. They shoot fire charges and can set you on fire. Drops: 0-1 blaze rod (essential for brewing and crafting blaze powder). Blaze rods are a key item โ€” needed for Eyes of Ender and brewing stands. Blaze farms are common for XP and fuel.

๐Ÿ’€ Wither Skeleton

Wither skeletons spawn in Nether fortresses (especially in corridors). They inflict the Wither effect (damage over time, black hearts). Drops: coal, bones and the rare Wither Skeleton Skull (2.5% chance, 5.5% with Looting III). Three skulls + soul sand = Wither boss. Fortress blocks (nether brick) are where they spawn most often.

๐Ÿง™ Witch

Witches spawn in swamp huts and during raids. They throw splash potions of poison, slowness, weakness and harming. Drops: redstone, glowstone, sugar, gunpowder, glass bottles, spider eyes. Witches drink fire resistance when on fire, healing when damaged. Raid farms produce massive witch drops.

๐ŸŒ Slime

Slimes spawn in swamps (night, light level 0-7) and certain deepslate layers (Y 0 to Y -40, specific chunks). Small slimes drop 0-2 slimeballs. Slime blocks are used for redstone contraptions (bouncing, sticky). Slime chunk finders online help locate deepslate slime spawns.

๐Ÿ‰ Ender Dragon

The Ender Dragon is the final boss of Minecraft, found in The End dimension. Health: 200 (100 hearts). It flies around the main end island, destroying most blocks it touches. Dragon fight strategy:

  1. Preparation: Full diamond armor (Blast Protection recommended), Power IV bow, Sharpness V sword, Slow Falling potions, blocks, food, Ender pearls. 12+ Eyes of Ender to activate the portal.
  2. Phase 1 โ€” Destroy crystals: The dragon heals from end crystals on top of obsidian pillars. Destroy all crystals first โ€” use a bow from range or pillar up with blocks.
  3. Phase 2 โ€” Damage the dragon: Shoot the dragon while it flies. It periodically perches on the portal โ€” run in and melee attack the head.
  4. Rewards: 70+ XP levels, Dragon Egg (mine with piston), gateway portal to outer islands.

๐Ÿ’€ Wither

The Wither is a player-summoned boss. Health: 300 (Java) / 600 (Bedrock). Summon by placing 4 soul sand in a T shape and placing 3 Wither Skeleton Skulls on top. Strategy:

  1. Fight underground: The Wither destroys blocks โ€” fighting above ground creates a massive crater. Use a deepslate tunnel.
  2. Weapons: Smite V sword (deals massive damage to undead), Power V bow. The Wither shoots Wither skulls that explode.
  3. Reward: Nether Star (crafts into a Beacon). Beacons give status effects like Haste, Speed, Jump Boost in a radius.

Mob Mechanics

Spawning: Hostile mobs spawn in darkness (light level 0) on solid blocks within a 24-128 block radius of the player. Torches prevent spawning. Mobs despawn if the player moves more than 128 blocks away.

Despawning: Named mobs (name tag) and tamed mobs never despawn. Holding an item also prevents despawn for some mobs.

Breeding: Most passive mobs breed when fed their favorite food. Baby animals take 20 minutes to grow โ€” feeding them accelerates growth by 10% per feed.

Taming: Wolves (bones), Cats (raw cod/salmon), Horses (mount repeatedly), Parrots (seeds), Foxes (sweet berries, trust-based), Llamas (mount repeatedly).
